April--Volunteer Month

Thank You!

Volunteer Recognition Day is observed every year on April 20. In addition, National Volunteer Week is celebrated from April 14 to 20. During this week, volunteers are recognized for their selfless contributions to help others and promote good causes.

At SKCGS we are always appreciative of the efforts of our many volunteers, regardless of the size of the job or amount of time of involvement.  As in an exquisite machine, every cog, regardless of size, is important for the smooth operation of the whole.

SKCGS operates totally on the service of its volunteers.  Among those are the elected officers of the Board of Directors.  Nominations are now open for the positions of Vice President and Secretary, to be elected at the annual meeting, May 18, 2024. We are happy to announce that we have a candidate for each of the pending positions, but more nominations are welcome.

Nominees

Alexis Hacker Scholz Currently Vice President of South King County Genealogical Society.

Alexis fell in love with genealogy while sitting at the feet of her Great Aunt Bess, guardian and storyteller of her maternal family lore. Raised in a military family, Alexis has lived throughout the United States as well as in Turkey. Her career in information has included newspapers, magazines, technical writing, and the internet. When not researching or writing, you can find her in the garden, the kitchen, or project room, and always with a book and her animals at hand.

Melanie Hinds Currently Secretary of South King County Genealogical Society

Melanie has been a member of SKCGS for several years, and has been on the Board as Secretary for the last 2 years. Melanie lives in Illinois and has an ancestor who spent some time in Washington Territory in the mid-1850s. She enjoys spending time researching the females in the family tree, whose lives and accomplishments often get forgotten in history.

Nominations remain open until the May 18 election; other nominations can be submitted at nominating-committee@skcgs.org.

More Opportunities

Meanwhile, there are numerous other volunteer opportunities available. Do you have a burning desire to work with spreadsheets?  Is social media your bailiwick? Is the local library a favorite stop every few weeks? How about meeting in person? We don't have hybrid meetings because we lack a person or two who can facilitate the in-person part of hybrid meetings.

The King County Library System keeps asking us for more helpful volunteers in the local libraries, and we also need people to stop by every few weeks to check that the libraries have our brochures on hand. More opportunities are here: https://www.skcgs.org/support-skcgs/volunteer

Write to info@SKCGS.org to inquire about any of these interests of yours and we'll get you set up.
