A Tribute to Sarah: Sarah Little, 1947-2023

Image by orchidart on Freepik From 1988 to 2000, I was the Administrative Assistant at the Southeast Seattle Senior Center. In the early years, sometime around 1990, the seniors were offered a beginning genealogy class, taught by Sarah Little.  Sarah came once a month to teach the class and I would often help her make handout copies on our copy machine. As an employee, I was busy in my office and could not take the class; I wasn't very interested in taking a class anyway because my mother's cousin had done our family history back in 1960. He had traced us back to an ancestor born about 1800 in Vermont; it was all done, no need to do anything more. Ha! In early 2001 my cousins and I decided we should update that 1960, seven-page history and I offered to type it up once we added our spouses, children and grandchildren. In the meantime online, I found a 1634 Boston immigrant Stowe family with a descendent born in 1799 New Hampshire, same name as my 1800 Vermont ancestor. I was hoo

Organizations Collaborate Too!

It has come to my attention that people serving in their community are often involved with more than one organization.  It is also becoming very evident that organizations are collaborating with each other for the benefit of the general public.   SKCGS & KCLS For several years, South King County Genealogical Society has provided genealogical help at branches of the King County Library System.  As the Auburn Library Branch has re-opened after Covid closure, SKCGS volunteers are providing genealogical help once a month.  (We could do it  more often if we had more volunteers. Write to outreach@skcgs.org to volunteer.) SKCGS & GSMD and DAR Many of our society members are also involved with other heritage organizations such as  General Society of Mayflower Descendants , and  Daughters of the American Revolution .     "MFS is the Black Diamond 2022 Community Service Group Award recipient!!  The award ceremony will start at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 4 th .  Please join us

More 1950 Stories

Another Value of Records My Dad was listed at college in Eugene, Oregon. He had a part time job as a janitor for the Oregon State College of Education (U of Oregon now). It listed his address (College St) and his roommates and their part time jobs. The fun continues--I took pictures of what I found; I was doing the Family Review so I could see all of the fields! I sent pictures to my parents and went to visit them yesterday.   Art Sperber Dad remembered many things about that time and his time on the basketball team, cut short by the Korean War, his roommates (even his sister remembered his roommates) and that led into stories he remembered about his summer jobs; one playing as a pitcher for a logging mill baseball team, coupled with a job at the mill. But when the regular pitcher came home from National Guard and Dad felt really homesick for home cooking, he quit and went home to "the farm" in Tillamook for the rest of the summer.   My Dad is 93 and is sharp in some ways, bu
