The Unusual Christmas Gift

Pandemic

It was October 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. The whole country was asked to social distance, wash our hands, wear masks and stay home. Since we were staying home we were all trying to keep busy and were doing cleaning, filing, sorting, etc. 


Cleaning the garage

This day in October I decided to clean out the garage, something I have needed to do for a long time. On a top shelf way in the back, I found a box marked "old dolls."  I remembered this box is where my old dolls were and the china heads for dolls. I opened the box and yes, there were the old china dolls, but there was more than dolls. 


Hidden treasures

In the bottom of the box were a lot of my oldest daughter’s baby clothes. I took them all out of the box and into the house, decided to wash them as they were all wrinkled. After washing them and they all looked so much better, I got to thinking, "Do I have any pictures of her in any of these clothes?" 


Red Polka Dot Dress






I went looking through all my old pictures and yes, I found pictures of her wearing the red polka dot dress. The pictures were of the celebration of her first birthday. 











Sun suit







Then I found a picture of her in the sun suit, with her aunt. 








Yellow top






The picture of her in the yellow top was professionally taken for her first birthday.









Now I have these clothes and the pictures associated with the clothes, what next? Maybe my daughter would like them.


Another thought was……….. I’ll order an archival box and tissue paper and give everything to her at Christmas. Yes, that is what I’ll do.



Christmas!

Christmas Eve I gave my daughter the gift, not knowing how she would react, would she like it or not?


All my worries were gone when she opened the box and discovered what was inside. Her eyes started to tear up. Yes, she liked it.

What's the Question?

We genealogists are often told by experienced researchers how important it is to begin with a research question. I resisted doing this for a long time, but now that I use a series of questions to guide my research, the search is more focused and actually finds more of the history of the family I'm investigating. I use a Google Doc as the  research proceeds, where I keep the question(s), the plan, timelines, checklist of resources to search, etc. all in one place. I've seen others use spreadsheets in the same way, perhaps splitting up things in tabs (Excel or Google Sheets). I prefer a document because I add source citations as I find them and I can begin writing up the case right there in the doc as the hypotheses are proven. Help Save This Abused and Neglected Cemetery

Screen capture from Google Maps History In an exchange of emails this past week in both the main SKCGS group, and in the Washington-State-Genealogy group, many facts were revealed about the history of the I.O.O.F. Comet Lodge Cemetery, also known as the Old Burying Ground, the Georgetown Cemetery, the Graham Street Burying Ground and maybe more.  FindAGrave sums it up this way: "Since it was established in 1881, the Comet Lodge cemetery site has been whittled away to less than half its original 5 acres.
