Canadian Space Aliens Alert

Attention: Canadian Space Aliens!

Did your 19th century Canadian immigrants arrive via UFO?  Did they, by any chance, mention if Katherine/Katy/Kittie unknown maiden name was with them?

I've been searching for Kittie Kinney for twenty years with no success.  I won't go into the facts and assumptions in this particular ancestor; this blog has a different purpose.

While it is easy to treat searches at Ancestry or Family Search as if we were doing routine U S research, we are probably overlooking much available material at those sites and definitely missing other sites that focus on Canada.

It is always easier to filter your search by location thus eliminating the hundreds/thousands of results you might get.

Ancestry

At Ancestry you can select only the Canadian records by going to the regular search dialogue box, choose "Collection Focus" and then "Canada".  You can further choose Census or Birth, Marriage, Death records.  This will take you to a list of databases that focus on Canada where you can further filter by dates.

Filtering in this manner before you enter a name will save a lot of time and effort.  Notice that you can choose other countries in the same manner.

There are videos available at Ancestry specifically for many fields of interest.  On the right side of the Home page, select Ancestry Academy.

Family Search

At FamilySearch, choosing Records takes you to a newly formatted page where you can make further selections to filter your search.

Notice all the other choices you could make and mentally file them away for later exploration!  Especially visit the Research Wiki and follow some of the sources available with each article.

My Heritage

Record selection at My Heritage is similar in procedure; you have to know where to look for the menus to make apply your filters.

Library and Archives Canada

Explore the collections at this central resource for Canada, then look for websites for individual provinces, counties and even towns where your ancestor might have lived.  I have barely scratched the surface of resources available.

Enjoy your trip to Canada!
