September Happenings

Welcome back to a new program year! The Society has been so busy adopting new Bylaws and Standing Rules this summer that it does not feel as though we have been away.

I am excited to begin working with the new governance structure developed by our hard-working Bylaws Committee. Dorothy Pretare, Marilyn Schunke, and Valorie Zimmerman have devoted countless hours during the past eleven months to bring the structure of our Society up-to-date. Please say “thank you” to each one of them when you see them.
The Standing Rules were adopted at a Special Meeting of the Board of Directors, Monday, August 19. The President’s recommendations to fill the four Directors of Standing Committees were approved by the Board, and we now have a complete slate of Directors. Thank you to those who have agreed to serve: Education – Janet Camarata, Publicity – Valorie Zimmerman, Outreach – Rich Thayer, and Resource Management – Marilyn Schunke.

The Board of Directors will meet Tuesday, September 3, at 7:00 pm at the Valley Regional Fire Department, 1101 D Street NE, Auburn. In addition to some necessary reports, the focus of this meeting will be education. We will be looking not only at the educational programs offered at our general meetings, but also our Special Interest Groups, and classes we might offer to our members.

All members are welcome and encouraged to attend Board Meetings, but only Board members may vote.

Speaking of Special Interest Groups, the Family Tree Maker User Group will meet Saturday, September 7, from 10:15 – 11:45 am at the Auburn Public Library. Hopefully, the update we have been awaiting all summer will have been released and we can dig into it.

While we are at the library, are you making full use of your King County Library card? If you do not have a subscription to Ancestry.com, you can access it at the library AND you can access the international version as well as the U.S. version. With your library card, you can access newspaperarchive.com from home.
September 9, the Genetic Genealogy Group/DNA will meet from 1:00 – 3:00 pm, at WAPI, 28815 Pacific Highway South, Suite 7A, in Federal Way. We will be discussing using Family Tree DNA results.

September 21 is our first General Membership Meeting of the 2019-2020 program year at Wesley – Lea Hill. Lori Sauber will present “Organized Research From Cradle to Grave”. What a great topic to kick off our program year! Try to get there by 9:30 so that we have time to network and catch up on our summer genealogy finds.

Is it time to update your Evernote skills? Join the Technology Users Group on September 23, at WAPI. We meet and learn from each other from 1 – 3 pm (sometimes longer).

Friday, September 27, the Research Group will be back from summer hiatus. Winona Laird opens the Family History Center at 12817 SE 256th St, Kent, for SKCGS members. The FHC offers free access to Ancestry.com, Find My Past (great if you have UK ancestors), Fold3, and World Vital Records. The hours are 1 – 3 pm. You must RSVP to Winona at vice-president@skcgs.org if you plan to be there.

By the way, I’m sure you have heard that not all records are on the internet. Really? Recently, in desperation, I typed a letter, put it in an envelope with a SASE and put it in the mail. Just three days later, I received an email from the County Recorder saying that she had located a 25 page Probate File from 1859. Would I like to have it? I risked a speeding ticket getting a check for the cost of copies to my nearest mailbox.

Save the date: Dr. Tom Jones will be speaking at the Seattle Genealogical Society’s Fall Seminar October 5 and 6. He is the author of Mastering Genealogical Proof and Mastering Genealogical Documentation and many more articles in genealogy journals. Registration information will be available soon.

Mark your calendar now! June 6, 2020, Diahan Southard will present an all-day DNA Seminar for SKCGS.
