My Obsession--a Confession

Once again I lost control and devoured something I had vowed to savor slowly.  I tried to pace myself by thinking of household chores to distract me.  "I'll empty the dishwasher at the end of this chapter. . . three chapters ago."

Yes, Nathan Dylan Goodwin has done it again.  His latest mystery, The Dover Trunk Murder, is another enthralling work of intrigue.  Nathan always does meticulous research, thus his books transport the reader to another place, another time, with engaging characters.

In The Dover Trunk Murder, the reader is transported to Dover, England in August, 1914, days before Germany invaded Belgium sparking what would become World War I.  Our main character is Edwin Dalloway, Detective Inspector, lately of Scotland Yard and now newly employed by the Dover Burrough Police Department.

Edwin has barely set foot in Dover when someone finds a severed woman's arm on the sand next to the English Channel.  As he begins the investigation, readers are introduced to other main characters, some helpful and some hindering.

Nathan immerses his readers by describing the activities of his characters in great detail.  When telling us about Edwin developing glass photographic negatives, Nathan describes the process, step by step.  Murder investigation, Dover citizens concern about war, troop deployment, rumors of German spies, and personable characters--all have made this a delicious mystery.  And I definitely want more!

  DID YOU INHERIT A FAMILY BIBLE? Surprises! My parents had an interesting way of getting rid of “things” as they aged. I lived with my family in the Puget Sound area. My parents lived in eastern Washington, so when they came to visit us, it was usually several days, or at least overnight. The first thing I remember “finding” was an unfinished piece of needlepoint that I remembered hanging around my parents’ home for years. When I was young, he was infected with polio. According to my cousin, doctors have said he was actually infected twice, with two different polio strains. He was deathly ill for many months and in an "iron lung" for a while. Although he mostly recovered and was able to work, travel and have a wonderful long life, he was never free of polio even at the end of his life.  I asked my husband if he had ever known someone with polio, and he said that a kid in his neighborhood was infected and paralyzed. RLP 378: Interview with Gavin Beinart-Smollan * showed up, and I wanted to listen because my most recent genealogy project is all Jewish immigrants and their descendants, who mostly came to New York City from areas then called "Russia." Wikipedia says, " The Pale of Settlement included all of modern-day Belarus and Moldova, much of Lithuania, Ukraine and east-central Poland, and relatively small parts of Latvia and what is now the western Russian Federation."  Part of what makes this population challenging to research is the difficulty in locating records, and the confusing, even overwhelming DNA data.
