Step Up and Make a Difference

Step Up and Make a Difference: SKCGS Needs YOU as Our Next Secretary!

Hello fellow SKCGS members!

As my term as Secretary of SKCGS comes to a close, it seems like a good time to reflect a bit. It was yesterday I was just getting familiar with SKCGS and the many excellent benefits they offered members. From the presentations during COVID, to the monthly Genealogy Chats, I came to appreciate how special the SKCGS community was. And when asked to become the Secretary, I was glad to be able to give back and help.  So, I'm writing to encourage one of you to step into this rewarding role. If you've ever thought about getting more involved with SKCGS or wondered what happens behind the scenes, this might be the perfect opportunity for you!

Why Consider Being Secretary?

It's Perfect for Your Schedule
We all have busy lives; attending an in-person meeting may not be something you want to do. SKCGS board meetings are once a month in the evening via Zoom and last about an hour (sometimes less!). After each meeting, you'll draft the minutes and send them to the board. Initially, you might spend up to two hours total on meeting attendance and minute-writing, but as you get the hang of it, that time decreases. No commuting required, no need to live locally—you can serve from anywhere! [Did you know that I live in Illinois and have served as the SKCGS Secretary for the last 4 years?!]

Your Genealogy Skills Are Already Perfect for This
Think about it: as genealogists, we're already experts at keeping accurate records, paying attention to details, and organizing information. Those same skills make for an excellent secretary! You'll maintain accurate records of board meetings, track action items, and serve as custodian of our corporate records. Sound familiar? It's like creating a family tree for our society's decisions and activities. (The full list of responsibilities can be found in the SKCGS Standing Rules at Section.6.4.)

You'll See How Everything Works
Serving as secretary gives you an insider's view of how SKCGS operates. You'll be part of discussing new programs and resources, and helping shape the future of our society. It's a wonderful way to deepen your connection to the organization while contributing to something you already care about.

You Won't Be Alone
Our board culture is friendly, supportive, and collaborative.  It’s a great group who over the past 4 years have been a resource to me. And they have been incredibly patient with my questions!  And they (and I) will be with yours. I'll be available to help with your transition. The entire board is there to support you. We work together as a team, and you'll find that everyone is invested in helping you succeed.

Ready to Step Up?

The position has a two-year term starting with our June 2026 board meeting. This is a meaningful way to give back to a society that has likely helped you in your own genealogical journey. Whether you have limited time but want to contribute, are looking for a way to get more involved, or simply want to support the community you value—this role could be just right for you.

If you're interested or have questions, please reach out! Got questions? Email me at secretary@skcgs.org. SKCGS needs dedicated members like you to keep our society thriving, and I can tell you from experience—it's been truly rewarding to serve in this capacity.

Let's keep our genealogical community strong together!
